Bitter Sweets, by Roopa Farooki

As usual, I am inclined towards books that draw a small drama with enchanting prose and a theme of immigrants and the family saga. This book narrates the theme well with a happy tone – not the tear dripping struggle or hardships to the extreme. It traces the path of Henna, her marriage to the rich Calcutta family, their daughter Shona, and her sons – a story that sweeps continents. Built on a fortress of lies and deception, each character is alive and captured brilliantly. I am compelled not to write more as this is a book to be experienced.
