Collection of short stories by Ben
Fountain, this is a good read and gives
unique perspectives of lives across Latin America, Haiti and so on. The story Near-
Extinct Birds of the Central Cordillera
echoes laments of an aspiring PhD about
the extinction of ecosystem of birds when
he was captured by guerillas. The profit
oriented capitalist system and its impact on to the environment is narrated in a satiric manner. A golfer and his life to teach the generals of Myanmar, the classic moves of golf forms the theme in Asian Tiger and even here, the exploitation is widely read between the lines. Though the stories are lined in these areas, the book cannot be termed as a tear jerker or too deep into human miseries. Bouki and the cocaine is the story I really liked where the protagonist finds loads of cocaine and tries to reform his community in a different way…
