Dosa Wars - The Chutney Menace!
Monday, December 21, 2009The place where I serve my stint of bachelorhood is home to numerous eat-outs, be it the flamboyant diners with an ala carte appealing to varied taste buds or the legendary ‘sagars’ – the pet name for the small mushroom eateries noted for the ‘standing’ position in which the clientele enjoys the food. The alias name lies in prefixing the favored deity name alongside and apart from this minor variation, the menu would be standard but some places really boast an exceptional palette.
It was to one of those joints that my weekend plan was directed after the customary walk in the evening, where a cold breeze tries it’s best to flutter amidst the belch of automotive pollutions. The slow pace gives pleasure to the eyes in registering the colorful evening strollers and I reached the destination, high with life and a mild craving to snack on dosa, the pronounced delicacy. The place has a glittered frame with an award for best dosa in town, much like a coveted Miss India crown.
As the name, the queue remains unrelenting with a wide audience in all ages to get a nibble of this crown jewel. Willy-nilly, I kept my position intact, fervently wishing to reach the counter with my fellow fanatics in the throng. A dad in the mid forties with a look that bestows a meritorious track record of eating dosas was attempting the feat of a college kid by ambling in through the sides, disrespectful to the divine queue. Well, I had a smirk but another family seemed to have lost patience and a harmless argument ensued. The rival family was armed with a dad and son and there were questions and statements flying around.
Soon there was a twist with the words changing genre to a more abusive with family members being enacted in the litany. The son was equally competitive with having newly released curse words aiding him. The fight was abounding and there were push and shoves and many had lost their hard earned dosas and many onlookers were anointed with chutney in the raging duel. Considering my health and having lost a generous appetite, I took a safe path by ambling towards the ‘balcony’ to see the fight being clamed down by minions.
