Sputnik Sweetheart, by Haruki Murakami

I have always liked Murakami’s novels, this being my third read and there is some element that piques our minds. This novel has a surreal feel which leaves the reader to derive an interpretation. Having said that, this cannot be recommended widely as everyone would have to divulge and get the underlying theme.

Sumire, the aspiring novelist, falls in love with Miu, an older woman and the story is being narrated by a third person, referred only as K, an elementary school teacher. The novel gives beautiful narration of Sumire, the relationship with K, the wonderful friendship, the loneliness when she disappears like thin smoke! I believe the novel has some mystique quality when the author describes scenes that equates to spatial planes and time, which I couldn’t comprehend much but kept me glued.

There was one line that I adored: “Sometimes you’re just the sweetest thing. Like Christmas, summer vacation, and a brand-new puppy all rolled into one.”
