The 'Drive-In'
Wednesday, July 08, 2015A lazy weekend that was to be an undecided, unplanned glory of sleep as I dreamed a week ago was shattered by the very announcement of a drive, the once in a few months affair at office to attract talents. As much as I pour my dedication to this noble cause for the organization, the very thought gives me jitters purely connecting the thought of mindless slumber, monsoon rains and the fact of a walk-in, the mechanism where candidates could amble in, at any opportune moment.
When the Friday dusk peeled off to
a rainy Saturday morning with drops pelleting my windows, I kept my foot on the
cold floor to rise and shine. Being less energetic to make myself buy a car for
commute, I was resorting initially to take my super scooter, the decision
quickly giving way to ‘Uber’, the hip new mode of transport. With this being my
first ride, the free offer was already making waves and I left no
time in being chauffeured in this ‘Everyone’s private
driver’ concept.
Expecting chaos from a throng of
candidates, I paced in to a near empty office with panelists and
others looking at each other and doing brow movements. With the murmur of a
small boat sailing into the open sea, the hum of the air conditioner welcomed
any technical aspirant. Everyone were waiting for the next lucky soul to grace
the panel with their stockpile of answers to the carefully crafted barrage of
questions in the very essence of technology.
As was the norms, like on any
working day, I get powered on by a cappuccino from the Coffee machine. Fate had
a devious turn - the moment I touched on the button, the machine shook
brilliantly like an old steam engine and switched itself off. After trying
another three more times and mumbling the choicest of curses, I was contented
with plain bottled water and entered the fray of interviews.
Some candidates really energetic
and knowledgeable, a few others with a ‘I am-just-trying’ attitude, the
proceedings soon winded up. Around six in the evening was when I
decided to have a small catch up with a great friend and we drove to a
restaurant in town. With the accompaniment of conversations around
multiple themes as we always do, I drowned few of my incessant
worries in a barley drink and toasted to another day of rains and
activities!!
